Valmiera is the largest population centre of the Vidzeme region and one of Latvia's most dynamic cities.
In 1283 Valmiera St. Simon Church was built - this year is considerd to be the year of the foundation of the city.
Today Valmiera is dynamic, modern, green city with well developed infrastructure, de facto - entrepreneurship, education, cultural and sports centre of Vidzeme region. Valmiera is the only city in Latvia where the scenic and ever changing river Gauja winds through, which attracts many active tourism fans.
Valmiera lies in the northern side of the country in area of 18,18 km2, 106 km from the capital of Latvia - Riga (it takes 1h and 30 min to get from Riga to Valmiera going buy car).
Today there are 27 217 inhabitants in Valmiera (on 2010.07.01. according to the State Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs).
How to get there
There are comfortable air and ship traffics with different World countries. There are regular bus connections (1-2 per hour) and train connections (4 per day) between Riga and Valmiera, as well as other cities in Latvia.
Air traffic: Riga’s international airport lies 15 km from Riga city centre, ensuring traffic with Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Helsinki, Rome, Oslo, Milan, Stockholm, Tallinn and other cities in Europe. More information >>
Ship traffic: There are 3 ports in Latvia - Liepajas, Rigas and Ventspils. From Riga’s port regularly there is ship traffic to Stockholm what is ensured by “Tallink”.
From Ventspils port there are 4 regularly ship traffics: Ventspils-Nyneshamn (Sweden), Ventspils-Karlshamn (Sweden), Ventspils- Rostock (Germany) and Ventspils-Mintu (Estonia). More information >>
As well there is comfortably to go buy ship to Tallinn port in Estonia and then come to Latvia buy bus or car. From Tallinn to Valmiera it is about 270 km (about 3 hours to go by car).
